chess

Recently, i read an article, wherein the author has compared our life with a game of chess. He draws various similarities between the two, such as the need to envision, strategise and perceive. Vision determines our future in life and also in chess; strategies help u to devise means to achieve it and finally u perceive the results. There is, however, a very subtle difference between the two, ie, in chess u have only one opponent, but in life u are surrounded by them. In mathematical parlance, the game of chess is a linear equation, while life is a non-linear set of equations. Also, there is time gap between the two games of chess, which allows one to sharpen skills and learn from previous mistakes. life offers no such gap. u have to learn while you act.

Hi, Just chanced upon your blog through V's : and this title caught my attention :)

I somehow get the feeling that you could have mentioned better points to why life is different from chess - some that I could think of were these :

a) The rules are not defined in life - while they are in chess.
b) Unknown variables in life , known in chess.
c) The randomness of life is frightening , while there is usually a coordinated plan to what happens in chess : a direction/target condition - unless it is me playing ;)

I cant completely agree with your last point though ... you do learn from your mistakes , extrapolate/mutate it a new situation and perform different/better - so that way it is similar to chess (learning there is also similar !)

To end it , I am reminded about this this line from "Everybody's Free by Baz Luhrmann" - "You choices are half-chance , so are everybody else's"

Hi, its nice to see a comment on my blog after a long time. In a way, it has evoked me to continue writing again.

In my last point, i felt that the opportunity cost of losing a game is much less than mistakes made while dealing in relationships, handling emotions, et al.
